Research themes – Device materials

The study of functional materials has underpinned the enormous changes in information technology and electronic systems seen in the past decades. Research in the Department on device materials spans many of the most exciting areas in which the functional properties of new materials are being understood and developed. Recent highlights are world-record optical outputs from GaN light-emitting diodes, and the first reports of spin transport in carbon nanotubes and control over the properties of functional oxide thin films including ferromagnets, ferroelectrics and multiferroics. The department's extensive activities in applied superconductivity and magnetic devices also fall within the device materials theme
