Department of Materials Science & Metallurgy

PhD funding opportunities

The allocation of studentships from the schemes available locally in Cambridge is made on a competitive basis, and students are automatically considered as candidates for any awards for which they are eligible, or which their prospective supervisor has available at his/her disposal. There is no separate application form.

UK and EU Residents

1. Research Council Studentships

Most of the funding available to our UK and EU students comes from the EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council). There is a variety of funding schemes, but in general, students who are nationals of EU Member States and have worked or studied in the UK for a number of years, are eligible for a full award. Nationals of EU member states who have not spent any significant time in the UK are more likely to qualify for a fees-only award.

2. Industrial Funding

The Department has strong links with industry in the UK and overseas and, on occasion, funding may be available from an industrial organisation, either as a full award, or a supplement to another studentship.

3. CHESS funding (Cambridge Home and EU Scholarship Scheme)

Available for UK and EU students, usually as a part-award.

Overseas Students

Our overseas students are funded from a wide variety of sources, including schemes local to Cambridge (CISS, and the Cambridge Trusts). For further information see the Board of Graduate Studies website at http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/gradstud/
